Make me some fried tofu!
Instead of eating fried chicken, I’m making fried tofu instead!! Whether you choose a firm tofu, tempeh or homemade seitan, this meal will be a hit!!
The technique of battering, seasoning and frying has been practiced since the Middle Ages and known as a fritter. At the same time, the technique was being used in West African as street snacks or for special occasions.
The fun thing about this technique is that it spawns off into different fun food ideas. Such as, Fingers, nuggets, Buffalo wings, and fried “steak” and popcorn. Arthur Withers found southern Fried goodies in 1983, and today there are more them 100 different recipes for a Southern Fried meal. Paula Dean has a few good spices and ingredients you can work with!!
I decided to take some of those ideas and ingredients, and create my own Fried Tofu!
First you will need only a few items-
-Tofu/Seitan/Tempeh
-Rice Or Coconut Milk seasoned with Liquid Aminos, garlic and cumin
-Season Mix: Nutritional Yeast, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Cracked Black Pepper, and Sea Salt
-Oil (I used Olive)
Place ½ inch to an inch of oil in a sauté pan and heat on medium high. Slice the Tofu in the width of your choosing. Batter process is easy. Flour, Rice Milk, then Seasoning Mix. Double batter if you will!!
Once the oil is hot, place each piece of tofu in the sear until golden brown. Flip over and repeat on the other side.
Once the Fried Tofu is golden on both sides and nice and crispy, make your plate!! You can mash up some tatters with gravy, or check out the recipes I enjoyed!!
